Mothers' Day Gathering at the Nevada Test Site

May 14th, 2007

Western Shoshone elders and supporters gathered at the entrance to the Nevada Nuclear Test site to pray and show resistance to the theft of the land (Newe Sogobia) that encompasses the site as well as bombing ranges and the proposed nuclear waste facility at Snake Mountain (Yucca Mountain). Around 100 people gathered for sunrise ceremonies and sweat lodges. The first day's sunrise ceremony welcomed a spirit run of Western Shoshone peoples that started on the north side of the site. Corbin Harney called for this gathering as a reunion and healing prayer for the Mother Earth who has supported us so far. The people met prayed and ate food together. On Sunday, folks walked across the line to be arrested with permits in hand from the Western Shoshone people.
