Who we are, what we do, & who we roll with

The Ruckus Society is a multi-racial network of trainers dedicated to providing the necessary tools, preparation, and support to build direct action capacity for social change movements.

Why Direct Action?

We believe that direct action is a transformative practice; it asks people to act as though they were already free, to act with a moral and spiritual authority higher than the law. Direct action is vital for deep social transformation when it honors frontline communities, creates networks of care, and is visionary, strategic, and confrontational of the status quo.

We focus on direct action as a tool for our movements because of its power to fortify our imaginations of a just future and deepen our relationships as we organize our people.

Ruckus’s role in the grassroots movement ecosystem is to:

Train

humble and fierce community leaders in the theory, strategy, and techniques of direct action.

Equip

communities with technical and strategy tools to resist oppressive conditions and build alternatives.

Reflect & Innovate

on what's working, what needs refining, and what’s needed now.

Amplify

the impacts of grassroots organizing and build alliances for the long haul.

Build

intersectional social movements that win through the use of strategically mobilized direct action.

What we do

Ruckus is a laboratory for radical action innovation — we offer up-to-date training to frontline groups working for social change.

Our Legacy

Since 1995, Ruckus has been the premier source of training and action support for social justice movements in the United States, training thousands of activists in theory, strategy, and hands-on tactical skills for direct action. We work with communities on the frontlines of resisting state violence, where direct action techniques are most needed and our training and collaboration has the greatest impact.
