For decades, The Ruckus Society has trained people to take bold, strategic action. Because the truth is simple: the institutions that claim to protect us never have, and they never will.
Our safety has always come from one another.
As repression escalates, surveillance expands, and those in power double down on criminalizing dissent, movements must grow stronger, smarter, and more prepared. This moment calls for people who are willing to move without permission. Individuals who understand their risks and are ready to act collectively. We must shift what feels possible.
That’s what this space is for.
Through trainings and resources, we support individuals in practicing real community safety. Not safety handed down through broken systems, but the kind built through trust and preparation. Because building power requires preparation.
Movements grow stronger when people are equipped to support one another through uncertainty. When they take principled risks together and navigate high-stakes moments with clarity and care. We practice how to escalate when escalation is necessary. We study how to protect each other when repression intensifies. And we ask the questions that every movement must face:
How do we do big, scary things together?
How do we hold each other through them?
Inside, you’ll find tools, training opportunities, field insights, and movement strategies. Everything we share is to strengthen your ability to act boldly, responsibly, and collectively.
We don’t wait for permission.
We build the skills.
We take the risks that move history forward, together.
Notes From the Field
Our attention is drawn to Minneapolis and its people as they combat state violence. In the city and beyond, there is a strong appetite for hyper-local strategy. Neighbors were organizing block by block. Signal threads reach capacity by mid-morning. And community members were adapting tactics in real time.
Questions of risk, escalation, and care were emerging, but what is clear to us is that people are developing a nuanced understanding of violence, and at its core is a care ethic. They are doing big, new, and sometimes scary things, but they are engaging with it strategically because they care.
Resource Available: We released a new Safety Planning Exercise. The guide helps you assess threats using a matrix, map resources, and develop a plan. It’s essential for every group. Check it out!
